(2) Reading/Vocabulary Development. Students understand new vocabulary and use it when reading and writing. Students are expected to:

(A) determine the meaning of grade-level academic English words derived from Latin, Greek, or other linguistic roots and affixes;

(B) use context (e.g., in-sentence restatement) to determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or multiple meaning words;

(C) produce analogies with known antonyms and synonyms;

 

 

 

For this TEK - I use my Technology to get the class involved!!! Check out this link. It is called Buzz Word!! If gives the students a word, then a sentence. The students must decide what the word means by using the context clues inside the sentence. It is a great warm up and only takes about 5 minutes. The students then learn the origin of the word which ties in the 5.2A TEK of Greek or Latin words.

Have the students record words inside journal. They can fit about 10 words per page.

Types of Text!!!!

There are four main types of text. I broke the types into 4 groups.

Narrative - Fiction, Myths, Legends, Poems, Dramas, Tall Tales

 

Expository - Autobiographies, biographies, speeches, journals, magazines, articles, reports

 

Procedural - How-to guides, recipes, manuals, instructions

 

Persuasive - Advertisements, commercials, speeches, campaign, movies, editorials, essays

This is a great link but I don't teach the term "Technical Text" instead we use "Procedural Text" {working on creating a new pdf file, it will be added soon} 

 



Journal set up & Table of Contents

Journal set up!!! I began this journal with my classroom rule. I use Whole Brain Teaching. There are 5 simple rules. You can read more about Whole Brain Teaching here. Then I added the table of Contents. It takes up pages 2-4. Then on the 5th page I added classroom contact info. I use a website inside my classroom, it has links for the students to use outside of class, you can contact me through it, and there is a blog that is ran by the class. My Website

I have attached the table of contents for my interactive journal. It is designed to use ALL pages in a composition notebook. I will post pictures of my notebook throughout this process. The idea of using all the pages is the Left page is for the information - the CONCRETE items. Definitions, labels, copies of classroom anchor charts. The Right side is the created side: pictures, the "I can" statements and any thing else the student takes away from the lesson.

I use Dropbox for all my info. The folder and pictures will be public for those following the blog.

Welcome!

Hi! I am a stay at home mom who taught 5th grade. I loved the interactive journals we created inside my classroom. However there are not many that focus on Reading. Most focus on Math, Science or Social Studies/ History. I began this with the idea of making reading more interactive and having the student link right brain to left brain. This is a work in progress for me. I have created a few template for this journal already and used some from other teachers. Please feel free to copy, borrow or steal anything I post. We can only make each other better.

Please note that my journal is based for a 5th grade classroom. So you need to make modifications for your grade level.
